MAYERS CUBE

Mayer's Cube was first introduced by Pentangle in 1982 as a Christmas promotion for ICI Petrochemical Division.(Imperial Chemical Industries).

Called "Hexacube" and packaged with one piece out. The challenge was to put it together.

At the time Derek Mayer was an art student when he invented this brilliant and difficult puzzle. It was the only puzzle he designed but he had come up with several interesting variants while developing it. Ron Cook & James Dalgety of Pentangle were delighted to market it. Over the years they produced five different versions but only sold 3 commercially in various finishes.

Version 9b has 6 pieces and takes about 10 moves to dis-assemble.

A Mayers Cube was used as the puzzle box in Hellraiser II

Of designer's versions 7b, 8, 9a, 9b, and 10c, versions 7b, 9b & 10c were produced in commercial quantities by Pentangle. In different timbers, and sometimes painted, part painted, checkered, etc. 9B was the only one offered to the trade in June 1983).  Hardwoods initially Brazilian Mahogany but later woods included Afrormosia, Ramin and Cherry.

These photos are for identification and show the first part move of dis-assembly.
