BOXWOOD SLIDING PIECE BOX

A very fine late 19th Century boxwood puzzle box with a concealed mechanism.

The small blocks on the lid look as if they are carved from a single block, but close inspection reveals that they are very cleverly made and some slide under or into others. Moving the correct ones unblocks and completes a series of linkages so that a block on the back can be pressed in to unlock the two catches.

Unfortunately some of the mechanics have be damaged.
This x-ray gives some indication of how it works.

It is best left un-restored as the risk of damaging the artwork and general appearance is high.
