THE GREAT TRANSVAAL PUZZLE"RELEASE DR. JAMESON"
Made by Joseph Walker of Birmingham around 1897. A rare puzzle surviving with its original string.
Leander Starr Jameson was responsible for the unauthorised and ineffective "Jameson Raid" on the Transvaal Republic in South Africa. After he was imprisoned there was an outcry for his release as reflected in this puzzle. Later he became Prime Minister of the Cape Colony and one of the founders of the Union of South Africa. |

This advertisement from the "Poverty Bay Herald" shows that the puzzle was being given away as an incentive in New Zealand in 1897. | ||
