An amazing miniature Jigsaw, which is sadly now missing a few pieces. Cut by hand from an early artificial ivory substitute by Vera Jigsaws in France. This particular puzzle was given to the person who donated it to the Puzzle Museum by Oscar Wilde's son in the 1930s. It came in a sturdy velvet flocked box. << The back of the puzzle showing the intricate cutting. |
Above are a selection of small jigsaws for comparison. Bottom left the only hand cut one by Vera. Top left is a 204 piece die cut puzzle from Japan 2010. On the right a 99 piece jigsaw cut in Sweden by water-jet 1999. Bottom centre a 24 piece laser cut puzzle by Longstaff 1999.
Below is our curator's favourite Vera jigsaw. Not a miniature as it measures over 20 cm wide with 300 pieces. It is fiendishly difficult if you do not know what it is going to look like.
