THE DEFINITIONS OF SETS OF PIECES WHICH MAKE UP A COMPLETE PUZZLE.

An American Selection = An apparently arbitrary selection (Edward Hordern and James Dalgety 1970s)
An English Selection = A complete selection. (Edward Hordern and James Dalgety as the alternative to an American Selection 1970s)
A Japanese Selection = The Best selection verified by computer (Nob Yoshigahara)

The above three definitions were all being used seriously by major puzzle collectors during by 1980.

In 1999 emphasizing that they are intended to be whimsical and not racial the following were suggested on Nobnet.

Wei-Hwa Huang:-

British Selection: A complete set of pieces, verified by hand.
Japanese Selection: A complete set of pieces, verified by computer.
American Selection: A complete set of pieces, verified by fiat.
Dutch Selection: A complete set of pieces, verified by anything non-British.
Soviet Selection: A complete set of pieces, verified very painfully.
Chinese Selection: A complete set of pieces, verified by history.
German Selection: A complete set of pieces; no need to verify.

Patrick M Hamlyn:-

Australian selection: A complete set of pieces, but a few got lost?

Harold Cataquet:-

Italian Selection: A complete selection (can't be bothered to find the others)
Canadian Selection: A complete selection plus an extra piece
Mexican Selection: A complete selection (these are the only pieces I can think of)
Argentinean Selection: A complete selection (one is missing, but let's not dwell on it)
Australian Selection: A complete selection (some are upside down)
Swiss Selection: I don't want to commit myself; these may or may not be complete.
Jewish Selection: A complete set (but I'm not convinced)
Magician's Selection: A complete set, but one piece is hidden

This I think concludes the selections except we are missing The Irish Selection which hasn't be selected yet!

2005 Ronald Kint-Bruynseels: -

Irish Selection is most probably is "a set of pieces
perceived to be complete after drinking several beers".

Robert Reid: -
Martian selection: which is out of this world.
